During the year 2023, the Spanish tennis player Fernando Verdasco (40) also applied for a wild card at the Bratislava Open. In the end, his participation was a great move by the organizer Branislav Stankovič, as the stands on the TK Slovan Bratislava courts were filled during Verdasco's matches.
On April 20, 2009, Fernando Verdasco was ranked 7th in the ATP singles rankings. He reached this ranking after making it to the quarterfinals of the singles at the clay tournament in Monte Carlo, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Subsequently, he moved to his record position in the ATP ranking. He has a total of 7 ATP singles titles and 8 doubles titles. In singles, he won tournaments in Valencia (2004), Umag (2008), New Haven (2009), Barcelona, San Jose (2010), Houston (2014) and Bucharest (2016). He is also a 2009 Australian Open singles semifinalist.
"We will try to contact players between 50 and 100 in the ATP ranking to choose our tournament. As for Verdasco, it has proven itself very well and we have let people know about us not only in Slovakia, but also abroad. He promoted not only the tournament, but also the city of Bratislava and played one of the last tournaments of his career here. It was appreciated very much, especially abroad," tournament director Branislav Stankovič said about the successful move.
Verdasco took a trip to the city with his family on Tuesday during the tournament. "My two sons and family are always with me. They support me. It is then easier to manage this difficult situation when they are close to me," the Spaniard admitted last year.
